This time tried native VMware options and connecting NICs the same VMNet still passes garbage, but using "LAN Segments" works fine I vaguely remember using TAP interface created with OpenVPN earlier for the same on Windows. The problem seems ubridge.exe used by GNS3, maybe it's somehow configurable.

  • Unrelated to vSLX, but I could not pass tagged packets to it with just GNS3.
  • External mappings to VMware depend on you and GNS3. Internal on mappings can be redefined any time to use different ports on SLX side with a script+mapping text file in home folder.
  • The image is set up for 8 interfaces that I mapped as: eth0 - vslx mgmt bridge, eth1 - VMWare host (not usable for GNS3), eth2-7 - VMNet 2-7.
  • Instead you can use several hosts running one vSLX each, there should not be a massive CPU/memory loss from that anyway. You could in theory start several vSLX instances inside a single host, but any internal links will not be visible to GNS3, so sort of deceits the purpose and you'll need to memorize which NIC goes to which vSLX.
  • The image automatically starts a single vSLX instance, as a systemd job, so can properly poweroff vSLX on shut down as well.
  • I tried v15 and after some struggle could make it talk to VMware VIX API used by GNS3, but they still talk different dialects, GNS3 is able to start VMs, but does not understand that it has started

    If you are just going to install GNS3 for this better use VMWare player version 12.

    At this point VBox does not support full HW virtualization on non-AMD CPUs (support is coming in 6.1 release), so VMWare player is a better option.

  • interface naming in Linux is changed from fancy slot/pci schemes back to ethX one, so should hopefully work regardless of NIC type specified in VMWare on Virtual Box.
  • vSLX mgmt interface is also properly mapped to the same bridge and configured for DHCP. After that console is available with telnet to Ubuntu eth0 address on port 9001. You'll still need to login into Ubuntu host once to get IP address assigned by VMware DHCP or set up a static one. I used "Custom console" option in VMware guest that you can save.
